Sikkens Wood Stains & Finishes
Sikkens Deck Stains
Horizontal surfaces are exposed to the sun's damaging ultraviolet rays. These areas also receive high levels of moisture from the rain and snow and this moisture can sit on the surface for days or even weeks. Decks that are built low to the ground (less than two (2) feet) or are skirted cannot be well ventilated therefore, the moisture cannot escape below the deck. This means the boards are constantly subjected to moisture not only from above but also below.
Decks are subject to physical damage from foot traffic and scraping garden furniture. Physical damage to the coating accelerates the damage caused by the elements.
Due to these factors, we say that a deck is a unique situation. For a coating to properly perform under this variety of harsh conditions, there is little room for haphazard preparation, application or maintenance.
Since the horizontal surfaces of a deck are subjected to ultraviolet rays, standing water and excessive moisture, any film building coating can experience some degree of peeling because these elements can literally push the coating off the wood surface. Therefore, it is essential to properly prepare the surface as described in the exterior wood preparation procedures section before coating.
Cetol DEK Finish and Rubbol DEK will perform if applied and maintained to prescribed recommendations. Rapid deterioration of the deck surface can occur however, when there is standing water, spray from sprinkling systems, unventilated or skirted decks or, in the case of the Cetol DEK system, when the deck sits less than two (2) feet from the ground. If your deck will be subjected to these conditions, Cetol DEK Finish or Rubbol DEK systems are not recommended. In the case of the low lying decks or skirted/non-ventilated decks, Cetol SRD is recommended. Good drainage can be achieved by leaving adequate gapping (at least 3/16 - 1/4 inch) between the floor boards.
Sikkens Exterior Finishes
The exterior of your home is constantly exposed to severe weather conditions and obviously you need to protect the beauty of your home.
Sikkens is the best solution for protecting and beautifying your home. The choice of which coating system to use for the following types of siding construction is dependent upon the amount of ventilation behind the siding.
- Shiplap
- Channel
- Tongue and Groove: In the case of Chevron and Herring Bone design patterns, collection of water in the V groove may result in coating failure. Always assure the end grains are well-coated or caulked.
- Board and Batten
- Bevel
Poor ventilation exists when the siding is applied directly to tar paper, sheathing, tyvec, etc. This results in a lack of air circulation behind the siding to allow moisture to escape.
When the siding is applied directly to rigid foam or foil foam sheeting, excessive moisture/heat build up (foil-faced) can occur resulting in poor coating adhesion (peeling). If this is the case, all the boards must be back primed prior to the installation or the construction process should be modified (see "good ventilation" below).
These will help to reduce moisture absorption by the wood siding but peeling or blistering problems may occur if the wood moisture content is above 18%.
Poor ventilation also exists when strapping is applied from one side of the house to the other. In this situation, air pockets are created with no ventilation. The only route of escape for moisture is through the siding.
If the method of construction under the siding is unknown, it is best to use the medium moisture/poor ventilation coating system.
Good ventilation exists when the siding is applied over strapping which is staggered to allow for moisture to ventilate up and out from behind the siding. In this case, the low moisture/good ventilation system is the best choice.
Sikkens Interior Finishes
Coatings for interior wood surfaces are necessary for the protection and beautification of the wood substrate.
Interior surfaces are subject to various forms of damage including dirt, stains, scratches and blows. Such conditions cause the wood's surface to become discolored, punctured, faded and even yellowed. It is therefore necessary to cover interior wood surfaces with a protective coating to increase durability and, at the same time, enhance the beauty of the natural wood.
Sikkens interior coatings come in a wide range of colors, as well as colorless, to match existing interior decors and styles. They also provide varying gloss levels to give contrast to the wood surface. (Of course, colorless coatings that are applied simply to protect wood are also available.)
