Gas Appliance Venting Configurations

Direct Venting

Direct Vent gas venting is a venting system that has an exhaust and fresh air intake that co exists within one vent pipe. The Direct vent system is a coaxial system that has a small 3 or 4" inside pipe which carries the exhaust gases, and the outer pipe typically 7" carries fresh air for combustion from outside of the home. This system is more efficient since the fresh air is pre heated by the outgoing exhaust gases, therefore conserving heat by not drawing it out of the home.

This method is not as susceptable to negative pressure effects in the home.

Natural Venting

Natural Vent gas venting is a system that has only one purpose: to vent exhaust gas. A natural vent appliance will draw indoor room air to burn the fuel. Natural vent systems typically are less expensive than direct vent. Natural venting appliances would be used when a direct vent installation is not practical or possible, for example when a gas appliance is intended for replacing an existing wood stove or wood appliance with a masonry chimney. Multiple natural vent appliances can be vented through a common vent.
