Wood Appliance Chimney Configurations

Interior Chimney Configurations

Many factors must be considered when selecting and locating a chimney. The single most important factor in achieving maximum performance from your wood burning appliance is locating the chimney inside the house.

In winter when the ‘stack effect’ of the house is more pronounced a well-designed chimney will draft and flow upwards, even when no fire is burning. A fire started in a stove connected to this system will ignite easily and the smoke will flow up the chimney, not back into the room.

Single Story

SelkirkThe chimney is supported at the ceiling level with the attic space directly above.  A ceiling support and attic insulation shield is required.  Each chimney manufacturer will have its own certified components, do not mix and match components.

When the ceiling support is installed as per manufacturer’s installation instructions, the required ceiling clearance for the flue connector (smoke pipe) will be maintained.

Proper clearances around the chimney must be maintained as it passes through the roof level.  Install a roof flashing and storm collar to achieve a weather tight installation.  If the chimney extends more then 5 feet above the roof, a roof brace must be installed.

Cathedral Ceiling

SelkirkCathedral ceiling supports are used when there is little or no attic space or where the ceiling is sloped.  The distance that the lower edge of the cathedral support extends below the ceiling depends on the slope or pitch of the ceiling.  The manufacturer’s installation instructions will specify this distance.

Typically a cathedral installation provides only one support point and the chimney may sway or vibrate in high winds.  Additional lateral support may be required if the chimney extends more than 3 feet above the roof.  Lateral support can be achieved by using a roof support or a roof brace

Multi Story

SelkirkThe chimney is supported in the ceiling of the lowest level. The chimney should run up through the house as straight as possible. In some cases the chimney must be routed around beams, trusses or other obstacles that may interfere with a straight up chimney installation. Most chimney manufacturers provide tables to assist with the off-set design.

Where the chimney passes through subsequent framed levels the proper radiation shield or fire stop must be used. As the chimney passes through living spaces it must be enclosed, taking care to maintain the required clearance to combustible material.

Exterior Chimney Configurations

A chimney running up the exterior of the home should be a ‘last resort’ option. An exterior chimney is exposed to a cold environment that will cause the flue gases to cool and draft will be compromised.

Almost all complaints associated with wood burning can be blamed on poor chimney design. For an informative read about “The Evil Outside Chimney” go to www.woodheat.org/chimneys/evilchim.htm

Through The Wall

SelkirkThe wall construction will determine the parts needed to penetrate the wall. Combustible walls will require a radiation shield or firestop spacer to maintain proper clearances.

The chimney will be wall supported; only the certified components can be used. The vertical length of chimney running up the side of the building must have lateral support. Wall bands are usually spaced every 8 feet.

The chimney will pass through either the eave or gable and the proper radiation shield or firestop needs to be installed. In some cases the eave overhang does not extend out enough to allow the chimney to pass through. The eave would need to be cut to allow the chimney clear passage or the chimney off-set to clear the eave overhang.
